[2007Mpv14_1stDraft_Senate_BL_policy.doc]:
DATE: November 14, 2007
TO: Kris Stewart, Chair
University Senate Instructional & Information Technology Committee
FROM: James P. Frazee, Director
Instructional Technology Services
SUBJECT: Blended / Hybrid Learning Course Designation
Instructional Technology Services is seeing growing interest in blended
learning at the department, college and institutional level here at SDSU.
Essentially, a blended or hybrid class is a course offering that relies on
both computer mediated and face-to-face contact as significant components of
communication between student and instructor, student and content, and among
students. In particular, a percentage of the student/faculty and
student/student contact time uses academic technology to structure remote
activities. The remaining communication is face-to-face, similar to a
traditional class. The increasing use of blended learning and hybrid courses
has prompted me to request that the University Senate consider creating a
policy for hybrid courses that requires faculty pursuing blended learning to:
" Notify and receive approval from their Department Chair when pursuing
blended learning.
" Designate a course for which more than 20% of contact time is accomplished
through computer-mediated instruction as "hybrid" in the class schedule.
" Notify students of any unusual hardware or software requirements not
available to students on campus via the Student Computing Center.
" Ensure that the course syllabus contains clear student learning outcome
statements tied to course grading / assessment.
Please let me know if we can add this to the agenda for our next meeting.
Thank you.
