Campus Resource Forum

We are ready to begin taking reservations for workshops and events in the Campus Resource Forum.  The Forum will open on Monday, Oct 4 and close on Friday, Nov 19.  University Seminar students are invited to attend as many sessions in the Forum as they would like, however they are required to complete at least four to earn credit for the course:

1) The Wellness Workshop,

2) Any session sponsored by the Associated Students, and

3&4) Two other sessions of their choice.

Students make reservations for their choice of workshops or events through the CRF Calendar at the FSP website.  Please encourage your students to reserve their seats early, to ensure they get their choice of sessions.  The students will verify their attendance at each workshop/event by submitting to you the yellow copy of their event response form.  Please remind students that this is one of the requirements for credit in the course.

You should have received an e-mail message announcing the opening of the Forum, and giving more details about how to register for the sessions.

Wellness Workshop

You may have noticed in the article above, a reference to The Wellness Workshop.  Students complete the workshop in one of three ways, however those assignments are given at the time they reserve their place in a section. It is no longer the practice that an entire class goes together to a single session held in Aztec Center, but students are assigned randomly to different sections.

The required Wellness Workshop will only be offered from Oct. 11 thru Oct. 22.  It's VERY IMPORTANT your students register early for the workshop section that will work for them. Students can make their reservations for the Wellness Workshop just like they do their other CRF workshops/events---by going to the FSP website and opening the Campus Resource Forum Calendar.  The Wellness Workshop is the first item on the list

Note:  Without consulting with the FSP office, the folks in Health Services (who just took over the coordination of the Workshop this fall) began contacting individual Seminar Directors to request that they have students sign up for the Workshop directly on the Wellness Workshop website.  If you have already given your students that direction, that is fine.  But if not, please have the students use the Campus Resource Forum Calendar for this, along with their other three required workshops/events.  We want to keep this process streamlined and centralized for the students.

If you or your students have any questions or difficulties with the Wellness Workshop registration site, please call 619 594-4133 for assistance.

Site Visits

We have been hearing from Seminar Directors and Site Visit Coordinators about this semesters’ Site Visits.  Seminar Directors have commented upon some of the presentations needing some “work” and the site visit coordinators have noted some problems with attendance.  We continue to work closely with the site coordinators to improve the presentations and their pertinence for our students.  We also have begun to send a weekly reminder to all those scheduled for a visit that week, to help ensure that the visits take place as planned. Please let us know if you need any help or want to make a suggestion about the Site Visits.

Getting A Life

For those of you who may have women in your seminar who are undeclared and still trying to decide what career direction to take, you may want to refer them to an event of the CRF that is meant just for them.  Getting A Life:  Expanding Women’s Career Horizons will be held on October 15 from 1-4pm in Hepner Hall 130.  Donna Fry, a member of the San Diego City Council, will be a featured speaker at the event. This event is listed on the Campus Resource Forum, and might make a great experience for those who are working on questions of career development, career research, or any other career-oriented projects.

Summer Reading Program Events

At our recent Seminar directors luncheon, we discussed the students’ response to the reading questions prepared especially for them relating their experience as new college students to the issues and ideas in “The Spirit…”  It seems that the students responded quite enthusiastically to those questions, even if they hadn’t finished the book.  Many issues that had not surfaced before came out in the discussions, and students seemed to appreciate the opportunity to hear about their peers’ adjustment problems and experiences.  If you haven’t had your “Spirit” discussion yet, take heart.  Early reports are that the students will get into the discussion when it connects to them.

The committee is asking that all campus activities related to the Summer Reading Program be announced through University Seminar, in the hope that students might choose as a group to attend, or get credit for a class activity.

The calendar of events related to the SRP includes:

Cross-Cultural Center film night           Oct 6

Anne Fadiman campus visit                       Oct 15-16

For more details, look for a calendar of SRP activities on the SRP webpage at  http://dus.sdsu.edu/srp. and note articles below.

The Split Horn:  Life of a Hmong Shaman

On October 6 at 7:30 pm the Cross Cultural Center in collaboration with the Summer Reading Program is presenting a film screening followed by an opportunity to talk with the filmmaker and guests from the Hmong community in San Diego.  The San Francisco Asian American Film Festival describes the film as “a remarkable achievement.  An intimate exploration of family, place, and culture, it tenderly reveals the complexities of assimilation in the United States.”  Both the admission and the food served at the screening will be free to the students.

Fall Luncheons

Once again the FSP will invite Seminar Directors to monthly luncheons to share and ask questions as the fall semester unfolds. Please check the meeting calendar above for the dates and times of these luncheons, as we are reluctant to send out duplicates of messages that can be included here.  Your fellow Seminar Directors want to meet you and hear about what’s happening in your seminar.  We all look forward to seeing you at the Luncheons.

Class Rosters

The class rosters for your sections of University Seminar are available through the Web-portal.  If you have not yet been able to get to rosters in the Web-portal, please contact Lynnette in the FSP office immediately.

Teaching Materials

If you are not planning to use Your Guide to College Success:  Custom Edition for SDSU in your class, but you find that some of your students have purchased the book and have opened it, please encourage them to make use of the book as a personal activity that can help them, in addition to the activities in the seminar, to get acquainted with and adjusted to the new demands and opportunities of their first year in college.
